Who’s Your Go-To Resource?
It's December. Time to once again turn you attention to what your clients will be wanting in their landscapes come spring and summer. Where do you go for inspiration and news on new plants?
According to a 2016 survey from Ball Landscape (Thank you if you replied to our intern Abbie's request to fill out the survey…yes, she got her course credits!) many of you (41%) listed "looking at other people's landscapes" as the main sources for learning about new plants. The top source remains talking to your grower (60%) followed by trade shows (45%).
I get the idea of talking to your grower, but trade shows? We do work hard here at Ball to be at as many trade shows as we can in the winter. But it's still winter. Hard time to get plants grown. So…we do our best to grow plants in the exactly WRONG TIME of the year to show plants.
A better bet: Attend the seminars where the breeding companies and growers present their latest and greatest, as well as "what works."
I'll be speaking at several of these shows in January. The Gulf States Trade show 2018 in Mobile, AL, on January 17th, and again at the I-Landscape Show, in Schaumberg, IL, on January 31st. For those of you near Milwaukee, the WNLA has invited myself and PanAmerican Seed "plant guru"Jerry Gorchels to speak.
For "online" inspiration, check out the new section of BallLandscape.com that features photos submitted by landscape companies of their clients' landscapes.
In fact, take a moment to submit some of your own! Because after all, don't you want to be the landscape designer other folks want to copy?
Happy planning, everybody, and see you at the shows!
