Mums have been “the word” for Fall plantings for a long time now. If you want to change it up a bit, ornamental millet is the perfect partner. Rich, colorful foliage and plumes add height, color, texture and visual interest to commercial landscapes, garden beds or mixed containers – and provide the ideal color scheme for the cooler season. As a bonus, corn-like, seeded spikes become natural feeders for birds, and can also be cut and used in mixed bouquets.

ORNAMENTAL MILLET

With Jester, foliage color changes as the plants develop. Young leaves are chartreuse with a subtle burgundy overlay and mature to a dominant burgundy, especially in full sun. Jester also presents dark plumes. Plants end the season with nearly the same bronze-purple color as Purple Majesty, but flower later and stay compact longer. Very container friendly, but best grown in warmer temperatures.

Young plants of this millet are green; the stem and mid-rib of the foliage first turn purple after about eight leaves develop. Foliage will turn a dark, deep purple if plants are grown in full sun – from the base to the top of the tall, flower-packed stalk. Less light produces wider, greener leaves.
